Just as dismantling work is required for the renovation of a building, there is also demolition work for bridges, viaducts and tunnels to be able to maintain them. The road, which is subject to daily traffic congestion, has been constructed in such way that in many cases local maintenance no longer means that the road has to be closed for a period, but where a (single) lane closure is in most cases already sufficient to carry out maintenance work.
Just like buildings, bridges and viaducts, also known as artworks, are subject to maintenance. This also applies to the asphalt construction that is applied to it. The transition in the asphalt construction from the ‘normal’ road over to the bridge construction is called joint transitions. These constructions are constructed in such a way that effects in the bridge deck by all the traffic can be absorbed without damage to the viaduct or traffic delay.
In this case, the joint construction consisted of a joint rubber. As part of the maintenance of a joint transition, the joint rubbers are removed. This work requires expertise and knowledge from the infrastructure team to prevent damage to the joint rubbers and the rebate of the concrete. Flexible as we are, our colleagues have removed these in the evenings so that traffic is hindered as little as possible and delays are prevented.
Traffic measures have been taken for the execution of the work. In this situation, a half-lane closure was sufficient.
