For one of our clients we have recently remediated Asbestos from two buildings and after that, we have disassembled and demolished both buildings. The buildings used to serve as a school and a daycare center. New appartments and houses are going to be created where the buildings have been. The total surface area of the buildings was 2200m².
Remediation of the materials containing asbestos
Before the start of the demolition works we’ve first remediated the asbestos from the buildings. The materials containing asbestos were located both on the outside and on the inside of the buildings. On the outside, much of the materials containing asbestos was located in asbestos-containing-plates and asbestos-containering luting. These asbestos containing applications had to be removed in risk class 2, which means that the area, 5 meters from the buildings all around had to be closed off and not allowed to enter without breathing protection and protected clothing. After all asbestos being remediated, it was checked by an independent laboratory whether all asbestos-containing particles where properly removed and no residues where left behind.
The asbestos-containing materials on the inside of the building where at the highest risk-class, risk-class 2A. To remove these asbestos-containing materials an airtight containment needed to be build that was held, by using low-pressure machines, at an negative pressure of minimum 20 Pa.To gain access to the containment we used an three-stage disassembly decontamination unit, the waste was removed by an three-stage waste lock. After cleaning the containment, air measurements were carried out by an independent laboratory and a dust sample was taken. After the analysis by the use of an elektrode microscope, it was found that all asbestos had been properly removed and the containment could be broken down.
Disassembly and demolition
After the removal of the asbestos-containing material, the buildings where stripped and dismantled one by one and then demolished. During the demolition works we have constantly taken care of separating as much materials as possible in order to make recycling for reuse possible. For example, all steel have been cut and all the concrete is crushed for reuse. Of all materials that where released from the dismantling and demolition, 85% had been offered for reuse.
